Career Passion™ Case Studies

Crusader-Monitor
Change-Agent, Community Builder, Communicator

These are actual clients (names have been changed) who have explored their Career Passion™ through coaching.

Career Passion™ Crusader-Monitor

Crusader: Steve “loves the law” and sees the law as a mechanism to protect and serve. He also enjoys using the law as “a way to win.” Steve is competitive and dominant, when he feels a cause merits he energy. He wants recognition for his hard work and vision. Even in his 20s, he fought for and won the right to present his own reports to top management. Early in Steve's professional career, he became aware of child injury cases involving defective toys. He initiated an educational program and spent a large proportion of his free time giving free informational lectures to prevent child injuries. He enjoys power when it can do good. Steve expressed exhilaration at being “in the most powerful place in Texas ” – the government. Steve is not afraid of confrontation. He easily deals with difficult clients and has been the person who is relied upon to resolve difficult issues.

Monitor: As an attorney working in personal injury, he is consistent and firm in his love of the law. “I don't allow anyone who works for me to practice law. I am a stickler for the rules.” He has a respect for systems and process, if he sees them as practical. Rather than create new systems, he will work diligently to be sure efficient processes are followed to the letter. He easily monitors and manages dozens of complex cases. He sees his role as one of “moving cases through the system.” Because of his diligence and dedication to the work, he produces a high volume of high quality work. Throughout his career, he has been an eager student and has felt it a privilege to be trained. Steve is an extremely diligent worker who has high standards for himself and for others. He has been known as the “killer-biller,” who logged the most client hours in a law firm. He is very cautious and mindful in his decisions. He closely monitors his own feelings about decisions and rarely takes a misstep.

Career Considerations
Steve is strong willed and very capable. He is a seasoned professional who works best when he is creating the vision for the work. Although his idealism is dampened after years in the same, challenging environment, he still has a strong urge to do something that “makes a difference,” and that he views as “right.” If he were to be an entrepreneur, Steve has both the vision (crusader) and the follow-through (monitor) to set a course and keep to it. He is well suited to a situation where rules and procedures are set by him, then strictly adhered to. As a sole proprietor, Steve would be wise to hire staff to handle human resources, marketing and sales, as these are not his strengths. His strengths will lie in the vision, planning and operations

Change-Agent, Community Builder, Communicator

Throughout Angela's work life, she has consistently enjoyed being a Change-Agent. She has been a grant writer, creating the groundwork for a non-profit organization. She has successfully run a large social welfare agency, instituting significant change for the better. Angela has upgraded the technology in nearly every job she has held for the last 20 years. She has taught herself database management software then introduced others to it. She has created the environment for a “virtual executive,” by using modern tools and communication. She has cleared up months of billing backlog, then smoothed out the procedures to prevent future problems. Her results are significant, because she has successfully implemented change while winning over the people affected by change.

Angela enjoys the big picture. She always wants to know how her work ties in with the whole. She becomes expert in business law, contracts, copyright law, legal proceedings and other complex issues affecting her work. She has drafted legal briefs. She works masterfully as the right hand for the one in charge, because she goes far beyond the role of assistant, to that of influencer. She has the confidence and the moxie to strategize with the top-level managers of the company. She reads extensively in industry literature, and takes pride in spotting trends. She is able to quickly identify the bottom line, translating legalese and techno-speak into English.

Community Builder: Angela is especially adept at identifying the need for building teams and community. In nearly every job, she causes disassociated groups of people to bond and become related. She once caused a group of bickering vice presidents who were jockeying for promotion to become a team who worked together. She has caused a group of administrative assistants to work together in order to better serve their supervisors and the company. She has gained the support of people in support departments by smoothing out procedural issues. She has caused a group of disassociated clinical psychologists to see themselves as a community. She has provided the means for club members to know each other and get recognition within the group.

Because she enjoys building community, her volunteer activities at work often center on event planning, orientation, high-level customer events, training in new procedures and other change-agent functions.

She does most of her change-agent and community-builder work through her Work Dharma of Communicator. Angela writes with amazing speed, quality and humor. She quickly and efficiently communicates what needs to be said to motivate action. She has taken on the task of changing the tone and attitude of a sales force. Her verbal skills (both written and oral) are so great that she cannot help communicating! In her family, she is known as the one who creates more web news features than any five people combined! In her work, she has been teased for her humor and called Office Goddess, Queen of the Castle, Wondrous One and MS. Angela.

Career Considerations
Angela is a person of enormous talent and passion. When committed to a cause, you can expect superior work and amazing results. She also needs a significant challenge to keep her satisfied. She needs to work in an environment where she respects the ethics and ambitions of top-level staff. Angela's high social values suggest that she should choose an organization doing good for the world. She should shoot for the highest levels of any organization, where her Change-Agent talents are needed and appreciated. Satisfying career options for her appear to be:

Executive Director – social welfare agency

  • Executive Assistant – profit or non-profit
  • Program Manager – social welfare or non-profit
  • Board Consultant – delivering consulting, Board retreats and training
  • Writer – Public Relations or media
  • Grant Writer
  • Fund Raiser
